There are two ways to start tomcat:
  • You can use Startup.bat. This script initializes some environment variables and then hands off the actual task of running tomcat to another script.
  • You can use catalina.bat directly. This is the script used by tomcat.bat. The first parameter specifies wether tomcat should be started in the same or a separate dos window: "catalina start ..." versus "catalina run ..."

Use catalina run, and you will be able to see the error message

cheers
