I have noticed many web sites, offering download, (http://java.sun.com/ for instance), these days do not provide simple hyper links to download stuff. Instead if one were to view the source of the download page, it is more or else submitting data (as hidden variables) to a servlet. Which then throws back the data to the client, which automatically opens a dialog prompting the user, to either “Save to disk” or “Open from current location” For instance a java.sun.com download page is contains: How is such a thing is implemented ? rgds g1    More>>

The parameters are POSTed to the server and the server looks at them and it figures out which file it should give to the client. It then sends the file to them.
