I am generating an XML file dynamically from a Java program and displaying that as a tree in the browser with the help of XSL. Can I change the xml data in the browser using the java script, so I don't have to go to the server to populate the xml again. And the tree will be refreshed without any request to the server

You can instantiate Microsoft.XMLDOM with Javascript, for e.g. http://www.webreference.com/js/tips/020116.html
and then manipulate the XML document on client side. However, to save the new XML you'll need to make a call to the server.
