I've been using Lucene for my university thesis. I'm in need of some documentation that explians how the index is formed. I recall that there used to be some of Doug Cutting's documents on www.lucene.org but I can't find them now that the URL has been redirected to Lucene's site at Jakarta.

Also, can you suggest an appropriate application that I can use to read the index files?
