I'm developing a multiplayer card game, and I want to host it somewhere. I'll have stand-alone Java clients that connect to the "CardGame" server, and I'm trying to understand if the CardGame server I'm writing is a servlet, a stand-alone program, or if the terms are interchangeable.

Also, if anyone has any advice about a place to host this game, I'd appreciate it.

michael, how can we answer a question about "CardGame Server" if we have no idea what it is. servlet and stand-alone java program are not interchangeable terms. one is a stand-alone java program, another is a request-response mechanism that allows clients to be serviced through a protocol which is usually HTTP. so I really do not understand what it is that you are trying to ask us?
