I have set up some user groups in MS Windows 2000 and added a number of users to these groups.

Question: Is it possible to let a Java application access information about these user groups in order to determine what groups the current user is a member of?
If so, would this mechanism work the same way on a UNIX platform?

java is a cross platform environment trying to offer a unified vision of the world. There are no standards when it comes to OS user and groups management, so Java can't offer one. The only help you will get are the user.???properties. Use JNI and create a package with a unix and Windows implementation. Someone else may have already done it.

cheers
