Is there a way to reduce the memory footprint of simple java apps running Java1.4 on RedHat 7.1

A simple HelloWorld in a loop seems to take ~ 9 to 10 MB of RSS viewed with top ... is this normal?

You might want to look at native compilation of the classes. IBM has a lengthy article regarding the use of gjc GNU Java Compiler for this very thing.
