I'm using Idea 2.5.2, and it does not have an idea.bat file. It only has idea.exe. What is the recommended procedure to specify JVM arguments for idea.exe? Specifically I want to set the initial and maximum heap sizes.

Open idea.lax file, search for the line starting with
lax.nl.java.option.additional=...
modify the values of Xms and Xmx.

I know this is not the ideal answer - but you could download the 2.5.2 .zip file and put the idea.bat and append.bat files from it into your bin directory - you can start IDEA with this and you can amend the JVM memory settings. This is what I did.

PS Don't play with the stack size - I found that increasing it made IDEA more unstable...
