The web.xml file in the conf directory is Tomcat's "default" web application deployment descriptor. Anything specified in that file is used by all web applications unless overridden.



You need to specify the "servlet" tag in your web application's own deployment descriptor, not Tomcat's. Copy Tomcat's web.xml into your WEB-INF directory and delete everything between the "web-app" start and end tags and fill in the elements you need (like "servlet"). Your directory structure should look like this:




| YourApplicationRootDirectory
| WEB-INF
| classes
- web.xml
| lib
| (other files/dirs as required)
