This might not be specific to SwiftMQ, but I figured I'd try here..

I have a client that maintains a table of temporary queues (that belong to other clients). Currently, I have a thread that checks to see if each of these clients is still available by attempting to connect to each temporary queue. If any of the queues throws an InvalidDestination exception, I remove the queue from the table.

Is there a better way to do this?

That is a way to do it. Although not usual. Another way is to use heart beats. There is an article on JavaWorld about implementing heart beats using JMS.
