Greetings I've just downloaded all that I thought I needed for Tomcat and ran the RPMs on my Red Hat 7.2 linux box. Apache was already installed by the default installation. I also have PHP installed on this machine too. I'm trying to follow a book I bought yesterday "Beginning JSP Web Development" and everything was fine until the part for Tomcat. Everything they had in the book didn't match at all nor could I find the files they wanted. Anyway, I can do the "service restart tomcat4" and it will go through the motions, but when I hit localhost:8080, it does nothing. Now I have the /etc/httpd/httpd.conf with port 80 and 8081 setup so I can hit it from outside my network... Any ideas   More>>

Any ideas??

The RPM for tomcat4.0.3 seems to be pre configured to use port 8180 and not 8080 as the docs say. Also the examples as well as the manager are in a seperate package from the base tomcat4 rpm.

http://jakarta.apache.org/builds/jakarta-tomcat-4.0/release/v4.0.3/rpms/tomcat4-4.0.3-1.noarch.rpm

vs

http://jakarta.apache.org/builds/jakarta-tomcat-4.0/release/v4.0.3/rpms/tomcat4-webapps-4.0.3-1.noarch.rpm

This confused me as well.

I have a similar problem. Everythings seems to start fine but when I go to http://localhost:8080 I get nothing. When I shutdown I get a bunch of errors. I'm running Red Hat 7.2, Tomcat, and J2SDK 1.4

Looks like they left out the examples in the rpm. I made a "test" directory in /var/tomcat4/webapps and stuck a index.html file in it. I can see it by going to http://machine.domain:8180/test/index.html But you should definitely check /var/tomcat4/logs/catalina.out to make sure that you're starting and stoppping tomcat okay.
