What can I do in order to decrease

the loading time of an applet with

a jdbc connection to oracle?

Each time the applet is loaded is

ought to load the 1.8MB jdbc driver

for oracle?

You might be able to get away with removing some of the class files, etc. from Oracle's JDBC driver JAR file.

I'd be careful, and make sure to test every single function of your applet with the new JAR file before distributing it.

Another option is to use a servlet as your middle-layer to communicate with the database. Then, you don't have to even send the JDBC driver to the client's machine.
