hope you do understand "messaging system" as "software-to-software communication facility" (or more exactly "message-oriented middleware"), as opposed to "groupware/email/workgroup" system....just checking :)
conceptually, JMS is 'yet-another-means-to-make-software-applications-talk-over-a-network".
richard monson-haefel and david chappell wrote an excellent book on JMS. it is only 204 pages, and it includes a quick review of 7 different JMS providers. Java Message Service O'Reilly
