How about running ANT from the same JVM as the IDE. It's somewhat slow starting a seperate VM.

Using the same VM, would also make it possible to keep the parsed XML doc in memory, so it didn't have to be read and parsed every time a target is invoked.

Actually this could open for the option to run other java based tools in the IDE's VM

And after that we would force you to include scripting capabilities through BSF (or at least BeanShell)

This is something that the Ant plugin for jEdit does, and it's much faster than running Ant from the command line.
