Can SwiftMQ be used as a file sharing mechanism. For instance could it be used to send a file (binary or otherwise) to many subscribers?

You should check the Replicator.

Go to http://www.swiftmq.com/documentation/ext_replicator/introduction/index.html

And you can always implement your mechanism.
