Is the transaction support by application servers only for beans using DataSources ?

In a session bean I am using the JDBC API to create connetions and perform database insertions. I am NOT using Data sources. The transactional behaviour is not exibited by the bean. But if I create connections using TxDataSources I could see the beans exibiting transactional behaviour.

Is there some way I can use application server's transaction support even when I create connections by loading driver and using getConnection() method?

you would have to add the connection you create to the application server's resource manager. it is so much easier to just create a connection using DataSource. if you still want to do it the hard way, you will have to refer to your app server's documentation to find out how to 'enroll' your connection into application server's resource manager. this is not in the specifications so each app server can choose to implement this functionality differently.
