What is the difference between the VMs created by the java command with the -client or -server arguments ?

Suns site states that -server is "optimised for intensive server side code", but what does this actually mean ?

How is it optimised ? Is it simply different garbage collection, a different JIT or something more involved ?

Check out this FAQ - in the Performance section. It suggests that the server VM optimizes aggressively while the client VM defers a lot of optimization to favor faster startup and a smaller memory footprint.
