I'm searching for a small Database Engine, that can be used without haveing to be installed.

Basically I want to write a program that can be used with an external Database (like MySQL, PostgreSQL, ...), but also without haveing to install a full-blown RDBMS. Of course I could write two seperate persistance layers, but it would be much easier if both ways used JDBC, and I just had to swap the driver.

As I want to give my programm away for free (GPL or similar license), I can't afford any non-free solution.

Hypersonic SQL

is a Java database engine with standard SQL and JDBC interface.

Very compact.

It can be used in applets, applications, as a server.
