Is there an easy way to protect Java classes against decompiling?

no.
but there's a program out there that
modifies all class & method & variable
names to "q23" or something else which
makes it a little harder to understand
the code as you dont see the variable
names. this, however, does not make
sense if you are writing an API because
at least the exported names should remain
more or less readable.

preventing disassembling is not possible.
