When I try to run GUI based applications, which are written in XMotif, I am getting error: "Can't open display".

I have written a java(V 1.2.2) application on IRIX 6.5 OS. when I run the application, it executes an executable(for example, mxaudio which is a GUI based application written in XMotif) using Runtime.exec(). I have printed both OutputStream and ErrorStream. In ErrorStream I am getting "Can't open display". Can anybody tell what can be the problem ? How can I execute GUI based applications from Java ?

Where are you trying to run the Java app? In a terminal window under X? Do other GUI apps run? Is the DISPLAY environment variable set?
