Syntax highlighting generally requires a code parser to run through the file and create tokens. Each token would need some action code to tag the file positions where the token began or ended. By using this information, you
can color the files as needed.

To do code completion, just remember
the names of the parts you want, then
check against that as people type.

ANTLR can be used for doing the above, yes, as it does have a parser.

I would look at Slava Pestov et al's jEdit. Just search for jEdit on google...They now use xml to for syntax coloring. No code completion as far as I know, but of course netbeans has it. And the sources can be downloaded from www.netbeans.org. Sorry but never could use code completion , must be my age.....
