Since pop3 cannot use getNewMessageCount(), can anyone contribute algorithms to check new mails

hi,

i have been wandering that since getNewMessageCount() cannot be use on pop3 provider, so i am wandering if there is any algorithms to check new mails just like Outlook or some email program.
