I want to install JDK1.3 and leave my earlier instalation of JDK1.2 on my computer. Then occasionaly switch from one VM to the other. Is it possible?
(OS Windows 98).

Yes. Just change your PATH and CLASSPATH (or leave CLASSPATH unset).
