I am in the process of designing a test plan for a rather large Swing Client.

Currently, we have evaluated the java Robot as well as IBM's BSF (Bean Scripting Framework), but dinged them because we would have to restructure a good portion of the client code to expose objects and method calls.

Can anyone suggest a GUI test tool that can test the app externally without having to expose the internals of the client. Or, can anyone seggest design patterns for exposing the code to test scripts.

look at www.mercuryinteractive.com and www.compuware.com. I believe both provide testing products that wrap and monitor the JVM while a macro-like application performs the actual 'clicks' on your UI.
