Hi, We need proxy aware client applications to make use of a proxy server. Hi,

We need proxy aware client applications to make use of a proxy server.

Lets suppose that this client needs to send a FTP request to a remote FTP server at port 21.Without a proxy server, this client application would make a socket connection to the server
and then send the FTP request to the port 21.

Now when such a application is given a proxy host address and proxy port number, it makes a socket connection to the proxy host and port. And then delivers the FTP request to that port.

The service running at the proxy port in question then parses the FTP request. If it is able to extract the remote server address and port, the proxy makes a socket connection to the said host and port and then passes on the FTP request to that remote server.

If the service running at the proxy port cannot parse the FTP request then it means that this proxy doesn't support the FTP protocol.

my question is:-

1. Correct me if this is not the exact communication.

2. The URLConnection class is proxy aware.ie. when we specify the http.proxyHost and http.proxyPort properties, it automatically connects to the proxy instead of the remote server.Does it lookup the local intranet addresses through Proxy ?.

3. How to make a application that is proxy aware and can lookup even local intranet addresses through the proxy.(just like IE has a option).

4. Consider a application that makes a socket connection to a remote server. After connecting to the proxy server, how does the client give the proxy server the address and port of the remote server.(Through which standard protocol.is it to do something with the Socks protocol ?).

thanks.
