I have a big WEB application project that needs to be developed in JAVA.

Some of my team members want to develop this WEB based application using mostly applets.

The application will have heavy database (Oracle) interaction. Is it possible to develop this kind of application using applets? I am told that the only way the applet (in client side) can talk to the database (in other database server) is using Sockets in Web server and having too many sockets in the server can create the performance problem.

If anyone has experience in this kind of project, please help me.

I haven't do any big project but I have some idea.

If your project is not required to use browser to run the client program, you should take a look and try "Java Web Start". You can find the infomation in java.sun.com.

If you want to use an Applet as a client program and avoid to use Socket to communicate with server, You can use Applet-Servlet Communication. Using a Servlet as a server side agent to communicate with other server/resources.
