We are running an SMTP application on SUN UNIX Servers. The app. is being developed using JavaMail. The counter party with whom our application interacts requires that we use port 25 for SMTP. To use port 25 in UNIX we must have root privileges. Is there a way to get around this?

Umm... The JavaMail API isn't meant to be used as an SMTP server. Its for mail clients, not mail servers....

You can run a process as root by setting the appropriate sticky bit. Have someone with root privs run the appropriate chmod command.

Or convince the other party to let you run SMTP on another port.
