RMI is stable and robust enough, and some AppServers offers an RMI service embedded.
JMS has different/more facility than RMI:
JMS uses publish/subscribe and point-to-point model, RMI just offers a point-to-point-like messaging model.
I think: if you're writing your app in an AppServer-context, check its JMS support, and use it if aivable. Otherwise if your application is a simple client/server application you can use just RMI.
