Efficient POP3 Folder Summary?

Does anyone have suggestions for efficiently presenting folder summary (message list with header info) from a POP account. I am currently using JavaMail with Sun's POP Provider. Getting or fetching the messages both work and are straightforward, but larger mailboxes take minutes to present. Does anyone have any successful experiences in solving this problem?
