The mailto-function in html does not work properly in all client machines. Could a simple applet send a message from an html-form to a client? Do I need to use sockets for this? Or maybe a servlet?
Where do I find the proper methods to send mail?

Check the JavaMail FAQ for to send mail. There is already entries in this FAQ for dealing with mail from Applets. In order for an unsigned applet to send mail, the web server must also be an SMTP server, as the applet can't communicate with another system.
