Novice BASIC authentication question

I have created a context with a codebase that is not in webapps, for instance, c:mycontext. server.xml: docBase="c:mycontext" debug="0"> I have the following web.xml file in the web-inf sub-directory under c:mycontext: Protected Area /* DELETE GET POST PUT tomcat BASIC Protected I am able to bring up the index.html file in the mycontext directory without any authentication. What am I missing??? Any help will be appreciated.    More>>

I am able to bring up the index.html file in the
mycontext directory without any authentication.


What am I missing???

Most likely the "web-inf sub-directory under c:mycontext" is incorrectly named - it has to be "WEB-INF" all upper case.

(you can test this by typing a deliberate error into the web.xml file, if you don't get an error message on starting up Tomcat then the file is not being read, which implies that WEB-INF is incorrectly named/positioned.
