Is tomcat and the apache server are the same? I know that it comes under the same project. But I would like to know the difference?

Anand,

No, they are absolutely not the same. Apache it's a very powerful and customizable web server, while Tomcat it's mainly a servlet container with a very simple web server functionality integrated in it.

To run servlets you need Tomcat. Apache can be used because it can add additional and advanced funcionality. Check out the paragraph "Setting Tomcat to Cooperate with the Apache Web Server" of Tomcat User's Guide for further information.
