Hi, i'm clement
I puzzling on which platforms (J2ME or EmbeddedJava) is more suitable for the Embedded system if i try to implement it on the devices that have small footprint( around 128K - 512K ) for instance, microcontroller with touch panel GUIs and intermittent network connections. What is the distinctive difference between this two Platform.
i also wondering is that necessary to have a RTOS on the Embedded system.

For that size of device, a J2ME-CLDC product (such as Sun's KVM) is appropriate.

J2ME-CLDC is distinct from J2ME-CDC (and its older counterparts, EmbeddedJava and PersonalJava) in (at least) the following ways:

  • CLDC is an order of magnitude smaller (a couple of hundred Kbytes, rather than a couple of Mbytes)
  • CLDC doesn't have proper java classloading and securityManager features
  • CLDC has a very limited set of Java APIS, whereas CLC has a pretty complete range of the core java2 apis

Typical CLDC implementations are written to run on platforms like PDAs and cellphones which have pretty minimal OS support.
