WebDAV is a protocol extending HTTP
with additional features like
browsing, locking, versioning, so it
makes it possible for many users to
work over WEB on the same documents.
see target="new"
href="http://www.webdav.org">webdav.org

Unfortenately there are no browsers/servers more than beta.
(Correct me, if I'm wrong!)
A server-reference implementation is Jigsaw, but not really a replacement (ersatz) for tomcat.

Tomcat supports WebDAV not directly,
but can be extended like done in
Slide.
look for the class
org.apache.slide.webdav.WebdavServlet
!

I'm not really happy with all that.
It' seems, its up to us to implement the features...
