Is it possible to run rmiregistry on a different machine than the remote object? How is it possible for remote objects running on different machines to "share" a common registry?

Not using the standard implementation of rmiregistry.
1 RMI server machine = 1 rmiregistry

If you need service discovery (ie be able to find a given service in a network without knowing where it runs) you will have to look at Corba
