I want to ask question on Lucene License, We want to use Lucene in our software, our software is a commercial software, its not open source.

Can we use Lucene freely in our software or do we need to pay for it.

I am no expert on licensing but my limited knowledge has been Apache projects are considered Open Source. As long as we do not modify the header at each source file and should we extend more functionality to what is being available, we are obliged to contribute back to the Apache community.

Also we may be requested to acknowledge the use of the libraries or product in our documentation but I believe some companies do not say so. But a demo of the companies product and viewing of their application log will reveal traces of Open Source at work internally :P

Most of the times, I will not be modifying the source code. I just package their Java Jar files along with my application. For example a common one is log4j and we need to have a license for log4j also ? :X

Can someone who are expert in Apache licensing comment ?
