You're probably missing the java compiler (javac). Eclipse is set by default to use the JRE (java runtime environment) which does not include the compiler. You need to install the Java SE which includes the compiler and then point Eclipse at it instead of at the JRE.


Window - Preferences - Java - Installed JREs - Add...Standard VM...


and then make sure you check the box beside it to make it the default.
