Java allows you to play online games, chat with people around the world, calculate your mortgage interest, and view images in 3D, just to name a few. It's also integral to the intranet applications and other e-business solutions that are the foundation of corporate computing.

Java is a programming language just like C or C++. Now that Oracle has acquired Sun Microsystems the company that gave us Java, it maybe wise to learn other Open Source languages like Perl or PHP.

Knowing Oracle business model, I doubt Java will be free for long. This is purely my own opinion.

Having said that, there are lots of Open Source projects that are developed in Java. Apache projects are classic examples.

However, CPAN Perl is the equivalent to Apache projects. Till today, regular expression is still best done in Perl for the most amazing performance I have experienced in my work.

Thanks.
