Can I activate virtual keyboard in a touch screen phone using J2ME?

My application (developed using J2ME) takes input through keyboard in a textbox. If I use the same application in a tocuh phone, it does not work. Since I derived the appliaction from Canvas and customized the text box, do I need to add/call some api to activate the virtual keyboard for entering text (in touch phone)?
