I am running my RMI server on windows and the client is being invoked from a solaris m/c.

I observed that the default port 1099 is being used only once (probably for handshake) and then random ports are being used for further communication.

Is there any specific range of ports being used by RMI Server in such a situation?

1099 is the generally used port for the registry

The user ports are about 50000 and up. Google to find a write up on port usage.

When you export your remote object you can choose the port for communication: e.g. UnicastRemoteObject.exportObject(impl, 50001);

If you don't explicitly choose a port, then an autonomous port is chosen
