I have a large J2EE app for which I am about to replace the Entity Beans with JDBC. I may well use DAO and support both JDBC and Entity Beans, but I have Stateless Session Facade Beans in the back of my mind and I'm not sure whether I can combine DAO and Session Facades or whether the two are mutually exclusive solutions?

While there is certainly nothing wrong with using a "transfer object" pattern to move data in/out of your Session facade, you might want to consider another option such as an O/R mapping framework. You mentioned replacing Entity Beans with JDBC, so take a look at Hibernate. It is a persistence layer that makes JDBC and data access simple.
