UDP are connectionless since they do not include handshake and involve no ACKs by default. You send the message and hope it has reached the intended destination.
There are tons of applications that require the above functionality e.g when we poll devices e.g. for CPU usage, we don't want to burden the device with handshake, ACKs etc. UDP keeps such apps lightweight. Other apps include Voice over IP, DNS, Syslog etc.
