I am trying to implement j_security_check, but I have noticed that when I attempt to edit the /conf/server.xml file to setup the realm, I can no longer log in to the tomcat manager. If reset the server.xml file to it's original state, login no problem.

btw I do stop the server before any editing.

Has anyone ever seen this before?

Thanks.

When you add the realm information in Tomcat's server.xml, it overrides the authentication procedures of the Tomcat Manager. Therefore, if your roles and principals were setup the same as those in the admin.xml file, you would be able login to the Tomcat Manager. Basically the realm will apply to all applications on your TOmcat instance.
