When you instantiate an object of type 'Thread' and invoke its 'start' method the JVM creates a new concurrent flow of control known as a 'thread'. So depending on your context, 'instance of a thread' might refer to the 'Thread' object you created or to the concurrent flow of control within your application that it acts as an interface to.

Regards.

That is an instanciated class, a so called "object", of type java.lang.Thread
