Hello,

I've just taken a look at the RMI tutorial, to be found at http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/rmi/index.html.

One of the statements made for remote methods is that both the argument types and the return type MUST BE SERIALIZABLE.

However, when explaining the design of their remote interface, it becomes clear that the return type of the executeTask(Task t) method is an Object, which does NOT implement the Serializable interface!!!

Can anyone explain this to me?

Yes, not very good is it. They should have used a context specific Type something like TaskObject. in short to get data across the wire using RMI it has to be either a simple data type or a Serializable Object
