Hi, I am pretty new to using Lucene.

How does Lucene indexes files? If a file is updated or created, is that file indexed automatically or the user needs to run a program to index it? This might be a very simple question, but I could not find an answer to this question anywhere.

I would greatly appreciate it if somebody can help me out.

You would need to write an application that is file-system-aware. You can learn about what Lucene is and what it is not if you download the free chapter(s) from a book about Lucene.
