Re: IO activity preferable?

We have some situations where we want to know the size of something, but the only way we've found is to write it out to a tmp file, and get the file size.
So where we should just be working with objects in memory, sometimes we have to take a detour through IO, with the possible errors, blocking etc. like you mention, plus worrying about the partition filling up, about read/write access (especially if this is in a Java Stored Procedure inside an Oracle database), about how things get deleted/cleaned up, etc.
I guess this is an example of what you are asking about? (so we are careful not to calculate the size very often!!!)
