WAR means "Web ARchive". A WAR is a JAR (in the OO sense :-) ). A WAR has many more rules about its internal structure so that it can be deployed on a webserver. There are quite a few other *ARs, e.g. EAR (for EJBs) or RAR (for resource archive - very rarely necessary).
