How do you redirect a web user to a password-protected web page (in Apache using Basic Authentication/.htaccess/etc.) without them having to type the credentials (user name and password) themselves?

You can't. Client don't sent Authorization header when redirect. See the concept of Realm with Basic Auth Scheme.
