Can I chop an already existing lucene index?

Can lucene chop out a segment out of its already existing index?

I can merge an index using IndexWriter::addIndexes(...) method.
Now, what I need is, if the index grows more than a particular size, I want to chop it off, store it in some other place and then later maybe if need arises merge it.
How can I go about doing this, if it is possible?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You could do that, but the logic for doing that would really have to be a part of your application, since Lucene does not have internal support for something like that.
